The movement has been aptly christened as 'God's Own Country'. It is a story of a man who goes from being a successful doctor back to his village after the death of his wife. He works on a project called "Operation Ganga" by employing villagers from all walks of life. It also talks about other aspects such as socio-economic problems in villages and the importance of preserving traditional cultures. The movie shows the good and the bad in village life. The movie starts when Ashok (Shammi Kapoor) returns to his village after a faraway stint in the United States in USA. He is heartbroken and in a deep depression. His wife had died and leaving him all alone in this world. He stays in the house of his distant relative Saroj (Meena Kumari), who takes good care of him. Suddenly, Saroj's daughter gets married and they come to celebrate this event along with Ashok. The celebration takes a different turn when Ashok realizes that the girl he loves is his cousin. Ashok's cousin falls in love with him and this makes an eternal rift in their family. A few years later Saroj dies and Ashok moves into a hotel with his friends, where he meets an American doctor called Dr. Boone (Dean Stockwell) and his wife, Neena (Deborah Raffin). Saroj's daughter comes to stay with them for a while. As time passes by and Ashok begins to get used to his new life and surroundings, the girl comes to stay longer. Ashok falls in love with her too but without telling her he sees that she is getting married to someone else. He then falls into depression. He later realizes that he has to forget her, find a new place to stay and begin his life again. When he arrives at the wedding venue after losing track of time he gets to know that his loved one was kidnapped by the groom's brothers. He immediately sets about to rescue her but shocked with his arrival arrives too late. After this incident Naina Devi (Meenakshi Sheshadri), a Christian woman who owns a local school for girls, hires Ashok as the principal. She starts feeling attracted towards him but Ashok does not reciprocate these feelings because of his love for Naina's cousin Sunita (Tara Deshpande), born into an orthodox Hindu family. Ashok is shocked when he finds out that his cousin Sunita has run away from home because of her love for him. And he cancels his engagement with her. Later, the doctor proposes marriage to Naina but she does not want to marry someone who wants to become a Christian. Ashok then learns that the girl who he loves is no more alive, because she was kidnapped by the groom's brothers. Ashok realizes that if he had gone too late for rescue, it would have been too late for him to get married as well.
